2. Falafel at Mamoun’s
Go to the hangouts of college students when looking for inexpensive food. In addition to being a favourite of NYU students, Mamoun’s in Greenwich Village is a dependable destination for anyone looking for delicious food at a reasonable cost. Grab a sandwich with falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, or baba ganouj for $3.50 (shawarma, chicken kebobs, shish kebabs, or kofta kebabs top out at under $6; a pricing that is very hard to beat).
The family-run establishment, which has been in business since 1971, is the first Middle Eastern restaurant in the entire United States as well as the oldest falafel restaurant in New York. In other words, it’s like paying less than $5 for lunch and entry to a history museum.
3. Scarr’s Pizza
It’s no secret that pizza is king in New York City, and finding the perfect slice is a quest that many people are always trying New York pizza menu to complete! The Lower East Side restaurant Scarr’s must be one of our honorable mentions. While specialty slices, Sicilian slices, and Grandma Slices are all priced between $4.75 and $5.75, a cheese slice costs only $3.75.
4. Dumplings at East Wind Snack Shop
Although coming from the gourmet dining industry, Chris Cheung has recently found success with nibbles that require breaking an Alexander Hamilton. Pork belly “Gwacos,” Shanghai vegetable dumplings, dry-aged beef pot stickers, and shrimp har gow topped with abalone sauce are all priced at $5, $7, $8, and $9, respectively.
Although these aren’t the 5-for-$1 dumplings typically available in Chinatown, the unmatched quality and premium ingredients make the small expenditure and the journey to one of East Wind’s three Brooklyn locations worthwhile.
5. Stir-Fried Liang Pi Cold-Skin Noodles at Xi’an Famous Foods
A big bowl of noodles is one of the few things in life that makes us happy. These steamed wheat flour noodles, which are addictively chewy ribbons, are stir-fried with scallions, bean sprouts, cucumbers, and cilantro. It’s completely worth the chilli oil splatters we unavoidably get while slurping like maniacs.
6. The Freddy Prince at Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop
Of course there would be a slice among the greatest affordable foods in NYC, and Paulie Gee’s serves some of the best. If $1 still doesn’t buy as much pizza as it used to, $5 does, and the Freddy Prince Sicilian-style square has a sesame bottom and is topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, and pecorino romano.
7. Mei Lai Wah
Mei Lai Wah appears to be a bakery and coffee store, but their Baked Roast Pork Bun, which costs about $1.75, is its most famous dish. Additionally, they offer a wide range of dim sum, noodle rolls, congee, and much more for only $5 to $6. Use any extra $1 bills you have lying around for this.
